Discovering Onzieme: A Culinary Landmark in Kingston
Nestled at the vibrant corner of Kennedy and Eyre Street in Kingston, ACT, Onzieme stands as a testament to the evolving gastronomic landscape of Canberra. This establishment has carved out a distinct identity for itself, drawing in locals and visitors alike who seek an experience that balances sophistication with a welcoming, neighborhood atmosphere. The location itself, situated at 35 Kennedy Street, places the restaurant at the heart of one of the capital's most dynamic precincts, making it a natural gathering point for those who appreciate the intersection of thoughtful design and culinary craft.
At its core, Onzieme is defined by a commitment to the rhythm of the seasons and the quality of its ingredients. The philosophy here is rooted in simplicity and precision, where the focus remains steadfast on allowing the natural characteristics of produce to shine. By fostering strong relationships with regional suppliers, the kitchen team ensures that every plate reflects the unique terroir of the surrounding Australian landscape. It is this dedication to sourcing and technique that elevates the dining experience, transforming a simple meal into a memorable exploration of flavor and texture.
The ambiance of the space is carefully curated to complement the culinary offerings. Upon entering, guests are greeted by an environment that feels both contemporary and timeless. The interior design avoids unnecessary clutter, opting instead for clean lines and warm textures that invite conversation and relaxation. Whether you are visiting for a quiet weekday dinner or a celebratory weekend gathering, the atmosphere is designed to be adaptable, catering to the diverse needs of the Kingston community. It is a place where the pace of life seems to slow down, allowing diners to fully engage with the food, the company, and the surroundings.
What Sets Onzieme Apart
Seasonal Integrity: The menu is a living document, constantly shifting to reflect the freshest produce available from local growers and farmers, ensuring that every dish is served at its absolute peak.
Thoughtful Hospitality: The service philosophy centers on genuine engagement, where the staff possesses a deep knowledge of the offerings and strives to create a comfortable, personalized experience for every guest.
Architectural Charm: Located at a prominent corner in Kingston, the restaurant utilizes its unique physical space to create an inviting indoor-outdoor flow that captures the essence of the local neighborhood character.
Culinary Craftsmanship: The kitchen team prioritizes traditional techniques refined through a modern lens, resulting in plates that are technically precise yet deeply satisfying and approachable.
Beyond the plate, Onzieme serves as a vital component of the Kingston social fabric. In an era where dining out is often treated as a fleeting convenience, this restaurant encourages a more deliberate approach. It invites patrons to linger, to discuss the nuances of a dish, and to appreciate the effort that goes into every element of the service. The attention to detail extends from the selection of glassware to the subtle lighting choices, all of which contribute to a cohesive narrative that speaks of quality and care.
The beverage program is equally considered, curated to provide a harmonious accompaniment to the food. Rather than overwhelming the palate, the selection is designed to highlight the subtle notes of the cuisine, offering a diverse range of options that cater to various preferences. This holistic approach—where food, drink, and environment are treated as equal parts of the whole—is what distinguishes Onzieme from other establishments in the region. It is not merely about providing sustenance; it is about creating a space where community and culture can flourish over a shared table.
As the culinary scene in Canberra continues to mature, Onzieme remains a steadfast destination for those who value consistency and creativity. The restaurant does not rely on trends or gimmicks; instead, it relies on the enduring appeal of well-executed food served in a thoughtful setting. For those navigating the bustling streets of Kingston, finding a spot that feels both elevated and grounded is a rare find. Onzieme manages to bridge this gap with ease, offering a refined experience that remains accessible to all who walk through its doors.
A Destination for Every Occasion
Whether you are a long-time resident of the Australian Capital Territory or a traveler passing through, Onzieme offers a compelling reason to stop and stay a while. The combination of its strategic location on Kennedy Street and its unwavering commitment to quality makes it a cornerstone of the local dining scene. Onzieme is a modern Australian restaurant in Old Kingston that offers a seasonal menu, made up of smaller plates that are easily shared. Firstly, I really liked the vibe and atmosphere of the venue, it had a somewhat rustic yet modern and artistic aesthetic. Hand written menus on both the exterior and interior surfaces was a unique touch. I did like that the restaurant was dimly lit but maybe it was a bit too dim, many people had trouble reading the menu without a flashlight. Menu wise I appreciated the variety of ingredients and flavours they had to offer. We ordered a good number of dishes throughout the menu. My favourites would’ve been the beef skewer, galette, cabbage and mushrooms. The dishes were beautifully plated and arranged, with good use of layering and colour contrasts. Different textures were also paired well in multiple dishes such as the gim bugak, skewer and galette. My main complaint would’ve been that some of the dishes weren’t served at a desirable temperature. For example, the main course bavette steak came out barely lukewarm which we suspect maybe due to it sitting around whilst waiting for the cabbage side dish to be ready and served simultaneously. The sourdough bread was also cold and at most restaurants would’ve been toasted or slightly warm. The service staff were all quite friendly and provide fast service, though we did feel a little rushed at times. Overall, definitely worth a try if you’re in Canberra!

Wanted it to be the highlight of my trip out to Canberra but it was a huge letdown.
Where to start…
1. the toast with duck liver pate was hard, like it had been forgotten after someone had burnt it.
2. Beef cheeks was dry and tasteless
3. Yorkshire pudding was cold and I couldn’t see how it goes with the beef cheeks. Two dry and tasteless items together.
4. Mushrooms with black garlic came across like a dish that was overcooked where much of it was burnt to crisp and came across as lacking finesse
5. Carrots - this one was our bad, we don’t normally eat carrots as a dish and we didn’t know they will serve this as we would have asked for something different. What I found surprising is that the service didn’t even bother to inquire why we hardly touched our carrots or finish our beef.
Finally this was odd, we were there to celebrate a birthday and the restaurant brought out a candle and dessert for the next table but not ours.
To be fair, we did enjoy one of the fried layered potato dishes with fish roe and I loved the halloumi with grapefruit and winter citrus. Also the last lady serving us was warm and friendly unlike the rest which came across as hurried and uninterested if we liked the food.

The is a seriously good eatery in suburban Canberra. The service is cheerful and mainly professional. The food is as good as anywhere in the country. Top marks from someone who has been everywhere! More

Another enjoyable meal at Onzieme. It had been a couple of years since we last dined there and we won’t leave it for as long before we go back. There was one mix up with our order but it was recognised without us saying anything and dealt with without any fuss. Service was attentive without being intrusive. More

Enjoyed dinner here last night. Brilliant service by all staff. Ambience was great. Great selection of drinks including some good noodle non-alcohol options. We choose to eat the $95 Prix Fixe. My partner is vegetarian so her portions were well adjusted to non meat. The only slight disappointment was the main vegetarian option which my partner simply received the side courses…
Overall, I’d still highly recommend visiting when in Canberra. We’d definitely visit again.

Exceptionally good food and drinks. Loved every dish that we tried and would definitely return back to try more. It hasn’t got a huge space so the tables are quite close to each other however we didn’t mind that.

We went to Onzième for a birthday celebration and had a lovely experience overall. We ordered à la carte and tried five different dishes.
The galette was creamy and it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular dish. The watermelon dish was tangy and creative, which was a refreshing surprise. The duck was very tender and cooked beautifully. The biggest surprise of the night was actually the cabbage — it was simple but incredibly well done and memorable. The lamb was also excellent and very satisfying.
The service was attentive throughout the evening and made the experience even more enjoyable.
Overall the food was thoughtful and well executed. The only small downside was the wine selection, which felt a bit limited. Expanding the options would make the experience even better. Still, it’s a great spot for a special occasion and we enjoyed our birthday dinner there.

TLDR; had a nice romantic dinner last night for our four year anniversary, although it was a bit underwhelming given all the good reviews we’ve heard, and the prix fixe was a bit disappointing for the price.
Had the prix fixe last night for $95 per person. The food was pretty good, however the servings were small and I felt like some of the choices were not very worth it.
Unfortunately for the prix fixe there was no list of what was on it, and although they did say we could customise it if there was something on the menu we wanted, it was hard to do without knowing what was originally planned to be on the set menu. For instance, the mixed leaf dish was a part of the prix fixe, which was essentially some leaves with a vinaigrette and some nuts/seeds, which I definitely would have asked to switch out if I knew it was on the menu as neither my partner or I like vinaigrette dressings, plus it felt like a stingy addition.
Additionally, the lamb shoulder serving was tiny and a bit dry and flavourless in parts, with the hummus cream being the best part and too little.
The food was generally really tasty though and well thought out, but some flavours were a bit plain for our liking. Favourites however were the consume, the chicken skewers, the halloumi, and definitely the amazing dessert.
If we were to go again, I would just order items from the menu as there were a lot of great options instead of gambling on the prix fixe. The service was really great though and the atmosphere was lovely, just a bit disappointed for the price, especially given we’ve had some other amazing set menus in canberra which were far more worth it and tastier.

The creativity and uniqueness of the dishes indicated the chefs were truly enjoying themselves. Highlights included a perfectly textured halloumi plate, complemented by pear and honey, and a surprisingly delicious beetroot preparation that demonstrated a complex handling of a simple ingredient. The flavor and texture pairings were consistently a source of pleasant surprise. The one setback was the pork skewers, which were slightly chewy; a sauce with greater viscosity would have also improved the dish by allowing it to adhere more effectively. This however did not detract from an otherwise great dining experience, which was supported by both a great atmosphere and excellent service.

amazing dinning experience on a Saturday night, we can only just got in for a early seating for 1.45hrs with a set menu which we can have choice in choosing 2 entree and two main being 4 people on our party. Wine list is quite extensive,
service is friendly and efficient while the dinning room is only on the small size.
The entrees is so delicious and well presented, main course is generous with the side so well mix.
